CHERREE MALLETTE BRINGS DRY BRUSH OIL
TECHNIQUE TO ORMOND BEACH GALLERY
Cherree Mallette had heard about the international Art Basel shows from artists she had met during her career, and now she was displaying her art at one in Miami. It was December, 2019, and Mallette was showcasing her dry brush oil paintings in Booth 801 at Art Basel Miami.
Drawing and painting from the age of five, Mallette always knew she wanted to be a professional artist. With the support of her parents and high school art teachers, she advanced rapidly and won numerous awards. Perhaps the greatest at the time was a two-year scholarship to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for an A.A. in Visual Communication.
While at the Institute she won many Best of Show awards, with the highlight being a three-month scholarship to study at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in New York City. During this summer study, Mallette was introduced to various art styles of masters and contemporary artists to encourage her to select her personal artistic style. Returning home in time to re-enter the University of Pittsburgh in the fall, she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Art History and launched the career she had been dreaming about.
After a move to Florida, Mallette’s career took her to many fine galleries, including Reef Gallery (Key Largo, FL), Snap! Orlando, and Feiman Gallery (SoHo, New York City). Her black and white dry brush oil exhibit at the Terrace Gallery on the third floor of the Orlando City Hall brought even greater recognition and acclaim.
After the Grand Bohemian Hotel in Orlando was purchased by a large conglomerate, the new owner replaced all the hotel’s art gallery consultants, including Mallette, with its own employees. On a sunny Monday last November, she ventured into Ocean Art Gallery where owner Frank Gromling was greeting guests and clients, in what would become a serendipitous moment for both of them.
Gromling wanted to hire an additional art consultant and an experienced framing consultant. Because Mallette had been an art consultant at several top galleries and was a certified professional framer with museum quality experience, she more than met the requirements Gromling had set for the new positions. In short order, she joined the staff and after seven months work is now introducing her oil dry brush “Splashparencies” collection in the gallery. Her art is attracting collectors from near and far, many of whom also are engaging her to enhance their art collections with her creative framing style.
Mallette and Gromling are planning a major art program to raise funds for water quality research projects. Her “Splashparencies” and the art of two other water-themed artists will be coupled with well-known expert speakers to form “Water Is Life.” This unique program will be presented at select venues in Florida and elsewhere, with the premiere event at Ocean Art Gallery in the “post-COVID” future.
When asked what her next great career accomplishment will be, Mallette answered without hesitation, “Exhibiting at Art Expo New York, Tokyo International Art Fair, and Art Dubai!”
Her art is currently a major exhibit in Ocean Art Gallery’s 3,000 square foot contemporary gallery located in the center of Granada Plaza at the intersection of SR A1A and Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 12 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The gallery complies with all CDC guidelines for COVID-19 control, including social distancing, masking, hand sanitizers, and surface cleaning. Those wishing to meet the artist may do so Tuesday through Friday or call 386-317-9400 for a personal appointment.
