More about Kari Powell
Biography:
Kari knew she had to do something creative with her life. She has always been hands on with her approach to life and her creations. Throughout high school she earned several awards for her skills in two-dimensional mediums including charcoal, oil, and acrylic paint. With inspiration and encouragement from her art teachers, Kari gained the confidence to move forward with her dream of an artistic career.
After graduating from the Art Institute of San Diego with a Bachelor’s Degree in interior design, Kari worked for 7 years in the design industry, taking jobs in Miami, Newport Beach, and La Jolla. Eventually she started her own design company and has been able to utilize her artistic skills by creating custom artwork and murals within the scope of work. Outside of design, Kari paints murals in both residential and commercial settings, renders drawings for architectural companies, and has mastered faux finish painting.
As a fine art enthusiast herself, she was most inspired by Van Gogh and the post impressionistic movement. The energy captured in Starry Night catapulted her desire to do the same. She started painting 16 years ago and hasn’t put the brush down since. Being a self taught artist she pushes herself to discover new techniques whiles staying true to herself and style. Having grown up on the water it’s ever changing presence brings a sense of peace and serenity that can be seen in her work. Her brushstrokes are fluid and create a rhythmic pattern. Each painting has thick layers of paint incorporated with mixed media to create depth and texture. She finishes each painting with resin or lacquer to create a high gloss wet effect. Her dramatic use of color brings life and energy to each piece.
Kari loves to share her passion with others and has been teaching painting classes for three and a half years. She paints on commission, and has pieces displayed throughout San Diego. Currently her work is showcased at The Mint Gallery in San Clememente,CA, SKD Studios in Newport beach, CA, Surf Hut Art Gallery, Bliss 101 in Encinitas, CA. and Ocean Art Gallery, here in Ormond Beach, FL.
